Ontario MPP Bhutila Karpoche Reintroduces Perinatal Mental Health Bill

Nov 4, 2021 – Calling all advocates! Share & tag Premier Doug Ford @fordnationdougford Health Minister Christine Elliott @celliottability and your local MPP (even if not in Ontario – ALL awareness counts!)

Here’s why:

Due to the Ontario Legislature being prorogued in early September, Ontario Parkdale-High Park MPP Bhutila Karpoche @bhutilakarpoche was given a second opportunity to re-introduce her Perinatal Mental Health Bill.

The Bill is called: An Act to proclaim Perinatal Mental Health Day and to require a review of perinatal mental health in Ontario and the preparation of a Provincial Framework and Action Plan.

The CPMHC was happy to provide feedback and additional points on the drafting of the Bill and we thank MPP Karpoche for reaching to the CPMHC. The Bill was introduced and passed first reading. It must now pass second and third reading before heading off to committee and receiving Royal Assent.

On April 15th, 2021, Bill 176, the Maternal Mental Health Act, was presented for Second Reading Debate in the Ontario Legislature by MPP Karpoche. Unfortunately, the Bill did not pass during the official vote on Monday April 19th but in the words of MPP Bhutila Karpoche, this fight is far from over! Read more about the CPMHC campaign for #Bill176 on our website. You did an outstanding job sharing and tagging and it all helps!!

The CPMHC will definitely be running a campaign to get this newest Bill passed and we’ll need your help again!
