Dr. Al Abaie, He/Him/His, Toronto, Ontario
Al is a Doctor of Medicine and lives in Toronto. After graduating from medical school, he practiced medicine part-time for non-profit purposes. He has been in the healthcare industry (mainly pharmaceuticals), starting in sales with giant multinationals and progressing quickly to management positions and eventually to CEO and Board Membership in private companies over the last 16 years. He is Chairman of an Intl. Trading corporation and the Director of Strategic Partnerships at a Canadian company that provides Continuous Medical Education to healthcare practitioners. Al is a political and social activist and a man with a deep passion for nature, climate, and animals, especially Dogs and Rabbits!
Al first became involved with perinatal mental health issues many years ago when he noticed it in his relatives. The complexity and extensive impact of perinatal mental healthcare persuaded him to take a proactive role in providing people with better education, more accessible access to mental healthcare and better management of their issues to help them recover fast. This passion for helping patients expanded to a few other fields such as Hemophilia and Infectious Diseases in later years. He has served these organizations as a volunteer, donor, and board member.
In 2023, he joined the Board of Directors of CPMHC. He believes that building bridges between big people, government, associations, and corporation with CPMHC can result in improving service to all Canadians whose mental health may be impacted by perinatal issues. Our mission is what inspires him with enthusiasm. All these passions shall finally be translated into the goal of “No person with perinatal mental health to be left undiagnosed or unsupported properly.”
